Mango Habanero Margaritas = OMG!

Photos & recipe from Chili Pepper Madness
If you relish margaritas, mangoes and spicy anything like I do you are going to LOVE this recipe! The best thing about margaritas is that they don't have to be boring or traditional. There are endless ways that you can prepare and impress your friends using the juice of the Mexican gods - tequila!

If your drinking buddy can't handle the spicy like you can I'm going to share with you how to manipulate the level of flamage desired. But first I must inform you of a little thing we call We Deliver Cancun. P.S. that was a link...left clicky the mouse and check it out! We Deliver is an excellent service provided to people who are coming to  Cancun or the Riviera Maya and not staying in an all inclusive resort. For a complete guide to chilies check out our article
Spicy Chili Meter and Tips to Surviving the Burn.

What you will need to create these delicious margaritas -

For the mango puree -
  • 3 mangoes
  • 2 large lemons
  • 1 large lime
  • 1 habanero
  • 3/4 cup of water
For the margarita -
  • 6 oz of tequila blanco
  • 2 oz of Triple Sec
  • 2 oz of fresca
  • 1 quart of the mango puree that you have prepared
How to prepare - If possible you will want to prepare the mango puree the day before you want to serve your margaritas. This is where you begin to govern the level of heat. If you want knock your socks off spicy, blend the habanero with the puree to marinate. The longer you leave it, the hotter it will get. If you want not too much to please your guests, wait until closer to serving time to add it. You can leave the habanero out of the puree and just add the sliced wheels as a garnish like in the photo. Remember the seeds can pack a punch!

     To make the puree -
  1. You will add the following to the blender or food processor : the mangoes (peeled and cut), juice from the lemons and lime, the habanero if so desired and water.
  2. Blend
  3. Store in the refrigerator overnight if making the day before.
     To make the margaritas -
  1. Put ice into a margarita pitcher.
  2. Add the mango puree, tequila, Triple Sec, fresca and stir. If you want a frozen or blended margarita use a blender instead of a pitcher.
  3. To rim the glasses (this recipe makes 4 glasses): mix salt and chili powder and spread on a plate. Rub a slice of line around the rim of the glass and place into the mixture on the plate.
  4. Pour in the margarita adding more ice if desired.
  5. Garnish with habanero and lemon wheels.
  6. CHEERS OR IN SPANISH "SALUD" AND ENJOY!

Jalapeno Watermelon Margarita

*This recipe was found at Spicy Southern Kitchen
Sweet and spicy margaritas made with fresh watermelon puree, lime juice, Triple Sec, and jalapeno-infused tequila.
Serves: 4 (Depending who you share with!)

Ingredients

  • 1 jalapeño, thinly sliced
  • ¾ cup white tequila
  • 8-10 cups watermelon chunks
  • ½ cup fresh lime juice
  • 1/3 cup Triple Sec
  • ¼ cup simple syrup
  • Salt, chili powder and lime juice for rimming the glasses

How to Create
  1. Place tequila and about 4 slices of jalapeno in a glass measuring cup and place in the refrigerator for 1 to 4 hours depending on how spicy your jalapenos are and how spicy you want the tequila to be. Take a taste after 1 hour and decide whether it is spicy enough. If so, remove jalapeños.
  2. Place watermelon (you may need to do it in batches) in a blender and blend until liquefied.
  3. Pour watermelon through a fine-meshed strainer, pressing on it with the back of a spoon to get all the liquid through. Measure out 3 cups of watermelon juice.
  4. In a large pitcher, combine the 3 cups watermelon juice, tequila, lime juice, Triple Sec, and simple syrup.
  5. Place salt with a little chili powder mixed in on a plate. Coat rims of 4 glasses with lime juice and dip in salt mixture.
  6. Fill the glasses with ice and pour Margaritas into glasses. Garnish with lime slices and jalapeno slices if desired.

Notes
To make simple syrup, combine equal parts sugar in water in a small saucepan and heat over medium heat, stirring frequently until sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat and cool. Can be stored in the refrigerator for future use.

Recipe originally shared by Hillbilly Recipes

24-30 Strawberries

Margarita Mix

1 box strawberry Jell-O
8 ounces tequila, preferably reposado or blanco
6 ounce Cointreau
Salt for garnish

How to make ~
Strawberry Prep

Cut the bottoms of the strawberry flat to get them to stand upright. When you do so, make sure that you do not cut off so much that there is a hole at the bottom.
Use a huller or apple corer to empty out the strawberry.
Once the strawberries have been emptied, use a towel to pat the outside of the strawberries dry.
Check each strawberry and make sure there is not a hole in the bottom before you start filling.

Margarita Mix

Boil one cup of hot water in a saucepan, then add in Jell-o powder and whisk until powder is completely dissolved, about 2 minutes. Set aside. Measure out 1/4 cup of cold water and set aside.
Combine tequila and Cointreau, in cocktail shaker filled with ice. Add liqueur mixture to cold water and stir to combine. Then add cold liqueur mixture to hot Jell-o mixture and stir to combine.
Pour final Jell-o mix into strawberries and chill overnight. Dip your finger in water or use a moistened brush to wet the edge of the strawberries, dip and rotate the strawberries in salt to rim. Garnish with a slice of lime to finish.

Native "Elixirs" of Mexico

On the peninsula of Mexico, like most places, you will find the popular elixir of tequila and its cousin mezcal. Both spirits are distilled from the agave plant, but the difference is that tequila has to come from the blue agave plant grown in the central state of Jalisco and is protected with a Designation of Origin (DO) by the Consejo Regulador del Tequila (the Tequila Regulate Council). Specifically the mezcal is made from the heart, called the piña, of the maguey plant which is in the same family as the agave plant. It is thought that the maguey plant was one of the most sacred plants of pre-Hispanic Mexico. The creation myth of mezcal states that a lightning bolt struck the plant, opening and cooking it, therefor releasing the the plant's juices. Because it was created by an "act of the gods," the liquid is called the “elixir of the gods."

Cerveza (beer) is also widely available and although you can find all national brands such as Corona and Dos Equis, two local beers stand out: the lager Montejo and the dark León Negra because of their bold flavors. The practice of a beer served with a wedge of lime in the mouth of the bottle is not as common in Mexico as it is in foreign bars and you will find that establishments that serve lime with your beer would most likely offer it on a small plate.

Balché is a Maya spirit that was offered to the gods during special ceremonies. It is fermented inside the hollow trunk of the balché tree with water and honey. In Valladolid (colonial town near Chichen Itza), during indigenous weddings, the bride is sprayed with balché as a sign of abundance. (You can follow the link to read the legend of the balché drink.)
Balché is not commercially available, but another Maya spirit, Xtabentún is easy to find in the region. Xtabentún is an anise-flavored liqueur that when authentic is made by fermenting honey produced by honey bees that their nectar came from the nectar of the xtabetún flower. Rum is also added to the mixture of honey and anise to enhance the flavor even more. It is possible that xtabentún may have its origin in balché, but due to the strong flavor that didn't appeal to the Spanish conquistadores, they introduced anise and took away the tree bark and corn. It is usually served straight, cold, or with ice and honey. It can also be served with coffee, creating a drink called "Mayan coffee" or with one shot of tequila and an equal part xtabentún then adding half a lime makes a "Maya margarita." Wikipedia.

Tequila Lime Shots & Fun Facts About Tequila

What a great idea and these make amazing party favors! Super easy to make and so fun to serve! Don't have enough shot glasses for all your friends? Don't worry this should do the trick!

These are just about as easy as it gets to make. All you need is a bag of limes, salt, and tequila along with a couple items from the kitchen. Begin with cutting the limes in half and use a small spoon to scoop out the inside of the limes. Save the inside of the limes on plate for later use. Using the juice from the lime, moisten the rim of the lime by putting the half upside down on a plate of lime juice then dip the half on a plate of salt. Fill the limes with chilled tequila and serve!

Helpful hints - You can shave off a bit of the bottom of the lime with your knife so that they sit level preventing them from toppling over. Once filled, try not to move them around too much or you will spill the tequila, that would be no bueno. You can use the leftover insidesto put a few drops into the shots or mix fresh lime juice with your favorite soda such as Sprite for chaser.

Here is some interesting information about tequila. - Tequila, made from the blue agave plant, can only be produced in the state of Jalisco, Mexico and surrounding regions dictated by Mexican law. The surrounding states that are also permitted to produce this traditional Mexican drink are Michoacán, Tamaulipas, Guanajuato and Nayarit. The soil in these areas are comprised of rich, blue volcanic soil that is ideal for growing the blue agave plants and over 300 million plants are harvested per year. There are two types of agave plants that are grown and the outcome of the crop depends on the elevation of the land. The blue agave plants that are grown in the lowlands are more herbaceous in flavor and fragrance. The plants that come from the highlands are sweeter in taste and aroma and tend to grow much larger. Mexico has been granted the right to the use of the word “tequila” but has an agreement with the United States that bulk amounts may be shipped to be bottled there. The origins of tequila are thought to come from the Aztec people that called this concoction octli and later became known as pulque, which has been produced and consumed still to this day.  As the brandy of the Spanish conquistadors diminished, they began to distil the agave plants which gave birth to North America’s first indigenous distilled spirits. Though some tequilas are still family owned names, the most popular brands are owned by multinational corporations. As of the last statistics taken in 2009, there are over 100 distilleries making over 900 brands of tequila and more than 2,000 brand names have been registered. Because of this each bottle is required to display a serial number corresponding is birthplace.  According to The Guinness World Records the most expensive bottle of tequila ever sold brought a whopping $225,000 in July of 2006.

Spiked Gummy Bears

Recipe by Erin Kennedy

Here is a fun and easy treat to add to any get together. The original recipe calls for vodka but pretty sure you could use your beverage of choice. It's pretty simple to make and very easy to enjoy...just be warned they could be dangerous!

To make these tasty treats just empty a bag of gummies into a glass bowl. Fill the bowl with enough vodka to cover all the gummies. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and place in the fridge. Since the gummies act like sponges the longer you leave them the bigger they get. You should leave them to chill for at least 12 hours and up to 4 days. After 12 hours the gummies will have soaked up quite a lot of the vodka and you will still be able to taste the vodka. After 48 hours the gummies are even bigger and you shouldn't taste the vodka as much.

If the gummies have soaked up all the vodka in the dish but you still want more....
don't worry they can handle it, just add more to the dish and return to the fridge!
